The Rotuma Council voiced its concerns regarding the diminishing traditional customs and languages that are vital to the community’s identity, emphasizing the need for urgent attention. During a recent discussion at the Great Council of Chiefs meeting, Gagaj Manav Kauata Pat Samuela highlighted the importance of cultural preservation and revitalization.
He stated, “Cultural preservation is an area that requires significant focus, with an emphasis on promoting Rotuman history and customs for future generations.” He pointed out a noticeable decline in traditional practices and languages, which are essential components of their identity that must be addressed.
As globalization and modernization bring new challenges, Gagaj Manav stressed the need for initiatives to promote awareness and appreciation of cultural roots among current and future generations. He added that fostering a sense of pride in their heritage is crucial to maintaining active participation in cultural practices.
“Contemporary forms of our traditional cultural practices, now often presented merely for entertainment, underscore the importance of our commitment to preserving our identity, traditions, and values in Fiji and Rotuma,” he remarked.
In the face of these challenges, the Rotuma Council is advocating for cooperation and togetherness among chiefs to tackle critical issues. “Support from the GCC can amplify our voices as we work for national policies that address the needs of our island communities,” he said, stressing the importance of communicating unique challenges and opportunities to central authorities.
The Rotuma Council’s initiative underlines a hopeful move towards revitalizing cultural heritage, ensuring that the rich traditions of Rotuma are not lost but instead cherished and carried forward by future generations.
This call for action not only seeks to preserve cultural identity but can also inspire greater community engagement and pride, fostering a stronger communal bond rooted in shared heritage.
