Residents of Tavua Village on Koro Island are excited as the long-awaited reconstruction of their church begins, a project nearly ten years in the making since its destruction by Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016. This significant rebuilding effort, estimated to cost around $190,000, has garnered support from both local contributions and the diaspora of villagers abroad. Notably, the Fiji Military Forces Engineers regiment has deployed five officers to assist with the construction.
The rebuilding process commenced late last year with the demolition of the remnants of the previous structure, followed by plans for a new, modern building. Although construction faced a pause during the festive season, the project is now back on track. In addition to restoring the house of worship, the new church will incorporate sustainable elements, including solar panels and updated benches, enhancing its functionality for the community.
Village headman Nemani Buliruarua has expressed sincere gratitude to the military engineers for their invaluable assistance, noting the strong communal spirit and dedication to reviving their spiritual home. This rebuilding initiative signifies not only a restoration of a physical structure but also a reaffirmation of the Tavua community’s resilience and unity in preserving their cultural heritage despite facing significant challenges.
