Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa has urged businesses in Fiji to invest in the creation of drug rehabilitation centers, emphasizing the importance of a collective effort to address the alarming issue of drug addiction, particularly among the youth. Speaking at the Sigatoka Coral Coast Festival, he acknowledged that despite the natural beauty of the islands, the community faces significant challenges from substance abuse.

To encourage businesses to take part in this initiative, Nalumisa highlighted the government’s introduction of incentives. These include a 13-year tax holiday for those establishing rehab centers and the duty-free importation of necessary capital goods. Moreover, the government plans to offer a full tax deduction for businesses that support these centers through donations.

He pointed out the government’s commitment to tackling drug addiction with a multi-faceted strategy, which includes exploring collaborations with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and setting up new facilities. He cited the establishment of a Narcotics Bureau within the Ministry of Home Affairs, backed by a $2 million budget allocation for 2024/2025, as part of this proactive approach.

The Minister outlined the Counter Narcotics Strategy 2023-2028, which targets seven key areas: demand reduction, supply reduction, harm reduction, legal reform, data collection, the establishment of a drug court, and building international partnerships. Recognizing that 50% of Fiji’s population is under 34, he underscored the urgent need for tailored programs that offer young people positive opportunities.

Nalumisa also noted that youth unemployment is likely to exceed the national average of 4.3%, reinforcing the necessity for investments in education, employment, and rehabilitation efforts.

This initiative reflects a hopeful turn in addressing drug addiction in Fiji, showcasing the government’s and businesses’ potential collaboration to create a healthier future for the nation’s youth. With a focus on rehabilitation and prevention, Fiji can work towards reducing the impact of drug addiction and empowering its young population.
