Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called upon the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) to fulfill its responsibilities towards the communities it represents. This challenge was delivered during his address at the Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations held in Labasa. Rabuka emphasized that the TLTB, established by the late Ratu Sukuna, should remain dedicated to the welfare of indigenous landowners.
“In our efforts to diversify and strengthen our economy, it is essential to return to fundamental principles, focusing on agriculture, supporting local enterprises, and ensuring that economic benefits reach all regions, particularly the North,” Rabuka remarked, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to economic development.
He acknowledged the ongoing efforts of TLTB’s CEO and staff but expressed his desire for increased collaboration, underscoring the necessity to understand and address the needs of the people and landowners effectively.
The celebrations saw participation from hundreds of attendees across the three provinces of Cakaudrove, Bua, and Macuata, featuring students, civil servants, members of the diplomatic corps, parliament members, and traditional leaders. This gathering reflects a collective commitment to honor Ratu Sukuna’s contributions while also inspiring future generations to uphold the values of leadership and community service that he embodied.
This year’s Ratu Sukuna Day not only commemorates a historical figure but also aims to forge a path towards renewed economic collaboration and unity. Through education and community engagement, the celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of leadership that prioritizes cultural identity and sustainable development, paving a hopeful future for the iTaukei and the wider Fijian community.
The Prime Minister’s address and the accompanying festivities signal a resolve to address past disparities and encourage proactive measures that benefit all communities in Fiji.
