Selling green coconuts along the roadside in Nadi has proven to be a fruitful venture for Peni Namulo and Sailasa Kaitani. Mr. Namulo, 37, shared that their 14 years as roadside vendors has evolved into more than just a business; it has become a service that positively impacts the health of many in the community.

He noted that their primary customers are often individuals suffering from non-communicable diseases, as well as those who are purchasing for family members recently discharged from the hospital. “People typically prefer coconuts with minimal meat because they mainly want the juice,” Mr. Namulo explained. He emphasized that many customers return, expressing gratitude for the healing benefits they’ve experienced after consuming the coconut juice.

The duo caters to a diverse customer base, including tourists and Indo-Fijians, with an increasing number of iTaukei locals also frequenting their stall. The price for green coconuts ranges from $4 to $5 each, contributing significantly to their daily income, which can exceed $100, especially when fulfilling larger orders from nearby hotels and resorts. Recently, they fulfilled a notable order for 1,000 coconuts in a single day.

This story highlights the crucial role small businesses play in promoting health and fostering community well-being. As more individuals become aware of the health benefits associated with coconut juice, it’s encouraging to see local vendors like Mr. Namulo and Mr. Kaitani thrive while also making a positive difference in people’s lives.

Such small-scale enterprises serve as a reminder of the invaluable contributions local vendors make to both the economy and community health, fostering a sense of resilience and hope.
