The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has expressed robust support for recommendations put forth by Arvind Singh, a notable sugarcane farmer and former board member of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). Singh advocates for cost-cutting measures deemed essential for revitalizing Fiji’s beleaguered sugar industry, which has faced challenges due to prolonged neglect and mismanagement.
Dr. Ram Raju, the NCCI president, underscored the urgency of the situation, describing the sugar industry as being in a critical state. He pointed out the global sugar market’s volatility caused by oversupply and dwindling demand but maintained that profitability is still attainable within Fiji’s sector. Dr. Raju proposed the construction of two advanced sugar mills on the islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Given that Fiji produces around one million tonnes of sugarcane and has approximately 10,500 active cane farmers, this initiative could significantly boost operational efficiency.
The perspectives shared by Singh and Dr. Raju align with discussions from previous articles that advocate for reform in managing small, underperforming farms. They propose that resource consolidation into larger, more sustainable operations is necessary. Immediate action is urged as the industry grapples with declining sugarcane yields and an aging workforce.
The optimism expressed by these industry leaders reflects a unified belief that strategic reforms, improved resource management, and collaborative efforts among stakeholders—including farmers, government, and business leaders—could rejuvenate Fiji’s sugar sector. Historically, this industry has been vital to the national economy, providing livelihoods for many families.
As positive developments unfold, the focus remains on the importance of accountability and innovation to revitalize the sugar industry. By promoting better practices and fostering stronger partnerships, Fiji’s agricultural sector stands a chance for recovery and sustainability, offering hope for a brighter economic future.
