The recent changes regarding the Public Works Department (PWD) by the previous government have led to significant workforce displacement, affecting hundreds of skilled workers. Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized the prolonged timeline necessary for rebuilding the department, stating that the restoration process could span 16 years but is realistically expected to achieve meaningful progress within two to three years.
During a session addressing queries from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, Tuisawau noted that while it is essential to phase in the restoration of PWD, they are already making strides by collaborating with development partners, such as Japan, to resource various PWD depots. This cooperation has enabled the acquisition of crucial machinery that has already begun operations in maritime and remote interior areas, working in tandem with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA).
Tuisawau asserted that change management is a complicated process and cannot be rushed. He rebutted criticisms from the Opposition regarding the pace of transition by underlining the importance of a responsible and methodical approach to infrastructure rebuilding. He remarked that the government aims to ensure a smooth return to full operational capacity for the PWD while creating synergies with existing agencies to optimize their outputs.
