Reviving Fiji’s Infrastructure: A New Era for Local Contractors?

The Ministry of Public Works has provided clarification regarding the reestablishment of the Public Works Department (PWD), emphasizing that the initiative is aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of local contractors through improved oversight and project management, rather than sidelining them. In a statement to the Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Permanent Secretary Paula Baleilevuka highlighted that the revival of the PWD is crucial for addressing persistent issues related to construction quality, particularly in rural areas.

Baleilevuka stated, “Currently, supervision is a significant issue, leading to numerous complaints from residents regarding problems such as leaking buildings after contractors have completed their work. This lack of proper oversight is why the PWD is being reestablished—to ensure that all construction activities are effectively supervised.”

In a bid to bolster the department’s capabilities, the Cabinet has approved the addition of 700 new positions at various levels within the PWD. This recruitment is part of a broader strategy to enhance local capacity and support the growth of the private sector, ultimately securing long-term employment for Fijians in the public infrastructure sector.

Echoing sentiments from previous announcements, the ministry recognizes the substantial challenges ahead but remains committed to improving infrastructure through strategic investment and capacity building. This renewed focus holds promise for better infrastructure management and the improvement of living conditions for many Fijians.

The government’s proactive steps toward infrastructural improvements and creating job opportunities reflect a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s development. By fostering a stronger Public Works Department and local contractor involvement, the initiative is anticipated to lead to substantial benefits for communities across the nation.
