Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu is advocating for enhanced focus and investment in Fiji’s agriculture sector, highlighting its critical role in the nation’s economic diversification. This call for greater attention follows his recent “Know Your Opposition” tour, during which he engaged with key stakeholders in the western division and visited various agricultural operations.

During his week-long stay, Seruiratu witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by farmers and agricultural businesses. He stated, “There’s always been discussions about broadening the economic base, and agriculture, particularly, has a significant role to play.” However, he underscored systemic issues affecting the sector, including funding delays, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient government support for the agricultural value chain.

His direct conversations with farmers revealed widespread concerns about these obstacles, and he emphasized the necessity of understanding stakeholder needs to shape parliamentary discussions and hold the government accountable. “Apart from reviewing how funds were used in the last financial year, I also wanted to understand their expectations for the next budget. These insights will inform my contributions during the upcoming budget session,” Seruiratu explained.

Seruiratu has faced criticism suggesting that his tour may be politically motivated. Nonetheless, he firmly maintains that it is part of his obligation as an opposition leader to address these pressing issues and advocate for positive changes in governance.

This focus on agricultural development reinforces previous comments made by various political leaders regarding the sector’s potential to boost the economy, especially amid discussions about diversifying income sources and enhancing social protection programs. Agriculture, being pivotal for the livelihoods of many Fijians, presents prospects for collaboration among stakeholders to foster innovation and growth.

By prioritizing agriculture and addressing its inherent challenges, there is a hopeful outlook for the sector’s future, which promises not only enhanced market access for farmers but also improvements in food security and economic stability for all Fijians. The approach towards actionable policies and support could pave the way for a more resilient agricultural landscape in the nation.
