The Great Council of Chiefs is undertaking significant upgrades to the playground at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School. Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the chair of the council, took part in the groundbreaking ceremony, which coincides with the school’s tribute to the late Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna.
Ratu Viliame expressed concerns that the playground had been neglected for many years and emphasized that this initiative is part of a more extensive effort aimed at establishing a recreational space for students, enabling them to excel in sports. He stated, “Phase 3 of our development focuses on upgrading the school playground—a safe, inspiring space where students can pursue their dreams in sports and recreation.”
He noted that for 16 years, the school had lacked essential maintenance, particularly following the disbandment of the Great Council of Chiefs and the removal of Ratu Sukuna Day from the national calendar. Ratu Viliame also encouraged the indigenous community to focus on building a better future rather than dwelling on past challenges, referring to this initiative as a transformative movement likened to “the rise of the Phoenix.”
Moreover, since the Great Council’s re-establishment, Ratu Sukuna Memorial School has seen comprehensive renovations, including the refurbishment of four classrooms and the reroofing of the entire building.
This initiative aligns with previous community efforts, such as the significant $7 million redevelopment of Ratu Sukuna Park, which aims to enhance urban spaces for Fijians. Similar to the park’s upgrades, these developments reflect a commitment to creating environments that foster well-being and communal engagement.
The revitalization projects highlight a growing dedication to improving community amenities across Fiji, providing hopeful prospects for the future. The ongoing commitment from both the council and the community suggests an optimistic outlook for the playground and the school, ensuring that it remains a cherished place for generations to come.
