Reviving Boxing: New Gym Plans in Labasa!

Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa aimed at revitalizing both amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This initiative was highlighted by Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator of Labasa Town Council, during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday.

Ligairi attended the South Pacific Boxing Promotion program held at Subrail Park, marking the return of professional boxing to Labasa after a nine-year hiatus. He stated that the Labasa Town Council is committed to reviving the sport by undertaking this project.

The proposed site for the gym is located near the botanical garden at Lions Park, with construction expected to commence soon. Funding support is being sought from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji.

“We will have a boxing ring for training and a fully equipped gym,” Ligairi confirmed. The decision to build a new facility comes after recognizing the limited space at the Nasekula Gym, with the aim of providing a more spacious environment for training.

Discussions are ongoing between the Labasa Town Council and the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) to develop a larger gym in town. The MRU previously assisted in setting up the gym at Nasekula and has donated equipment for the initiative. The Labasa Town Council has also reached out to several Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for additional support.

Ligairi emphasized that this development could enhance the financial standing of the Labasa Town Council while also encouraging more individuals to engage in boxing and explore their potential. He noted that hosting significant sporting events such as the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament, the Vodafone Deans Trophy for Fiji Secondary Schools rugby, and various boxing promotions has energized the community in Vanua Levu.

“This initiative represents a holistic approach that benefits not only the council but also the local economy, including hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants,” he added.
