Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica emphasized that the refurbishment of Ratu Sukuna Park is part of a larger initiative known as the Viti Levu Plan. During the park’s reopening ceremony, Kamikamica stated that the Master Plan, pending Cabinet approval, will serve as a foundational guide for sustainable urban development over the next 50 years, particularly benefiting the greater Suva area.
The Viti Levu Master Plan aims to tackle the urgent issues of rapid urban growth, traffic congestion, and environmental sustainability. It aspires to maintain and enhance urban spaces like Ratu Sukuna Park, which are essential for the city’s ecological health.
For Suva, this Master Plan translates to improved infrastructure, upgraded transportation systems, and a thoughtful expansion of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. By incorporating parks and open spaces such as Ratu Sukuna Park, the plan seeks to facilitate urban growth that is economically vibrant, environmentally sustainable, and socially inclusive.
Kamikamica reiterated the government’s dedication to urban development, highlighting Ratu Sukuna Park as a key example of this vision. He mentioned that through the Ministry of Local Government, several important initiatives are being undertaken to align with the objective of better-organized towns and cities.
“Our commitment to town planning is further demonstrated by the recent approval of the National Housing Policy Review. This policy represents a significant advancement in addressing Fiji’s housing issues, emphasizing affordable, safe, and sustainable housing for all while incorporating climate-resilient practices to enhance urban planning, ensuring every Fijian has access to decent housing,” Kamikamica added.
