Repairs and maintenance at the Suva Municipal Market have officially commenced, as confirmed by Suva City Council CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa. This initiative also encompasses the fish market section, addressing long-standing concerns raised by vendors regarding the deteriorating conditions of the facility, particularly the fish market.

Boseiwaqa stated that maintenance work has begun with the roof and will proceed downwards. He emphasized that improving conditions for both vendors and customers is a priority for the council. To bolster security, especially in light of recent theft incidents, the council will also be installing modern surveillance cameras around the market. The need for such enhancements has been highlighted by incidents such as a vendor losing 48 bundles of fish to theft, prompting calls for better protective measures.

The council is laying the groundwork for enhanced safety and security protocols, showing a commitment to not only upgrading infrastructure but also ensuring a safer environment for market vendors and patrons. Such proactive measures reflect a growing awareness of the vendors’ challenges, fostering hope for improved operational conditions in the future.

In a broader context, similar upgrades and renovations are being seen at other markets, including the Labasa Fish Market, which is also undergoing vital renovations to address issues like inadequate drainage and roof leaks. This trend towards better market conditions across Fiji indicates a promising shift towards improved vendor experiences and community engagement. The ongoing maintenance and security enhancements at the Suva Municipal Market could pave the way for a revitalized marketplace that benefits all stakeholders involved.
