Tevita Boseiwaqa, the acting CEO of the Suva City Council (SCC), has announced plans to expedite the renovation of the city’s bus terminal and market area, with completion aimed for December. This initiative is part of the larger “bridge to bridge” project, which is integrated into the council’s urban development budget.

Boseiwaqa highlighted that the current conditions around the west bus stand are unacceptable, stating that improvements will be rolled out in phases. The project will encompass the area from the Walu Bay Bridge to the Nabukalou Bridge, affecting both the bus stand and adjacent market.

Excitingly, the Carpenters Group has already begun beautification efforts by erecting a fence near Walu Bay, and other property owners are expected to join in by cleaning and painting their establishments as well. This collaborative approach is intended to enhance the overall aesthetics of the area significantly.

The SCC is prioritizing the upgrade of the bus stand and market, which will involve painting and refurbishing these facilities. In a community-driven initiative, youth groups registered under the Ministry of Youth will be engaged in these beautification efforts, receiving allowances for their work along with the necessary tools.

In collaboration with the Fiji Roads Authority, the SCC is also in the process of selecting a contractor to facilitate the project, which is scheduled for funding within this fiscal budget extending to July 2025. The immediate focus will be a budget of over $100,000 for initial upgrades upon entering the bus stand, with full completion projected for February next year, barring any delays.

These developments represent a significant step towards revitalizing Suva’s urban environment and promoting community involvement. It reflects a collaborative spirit and commitment to enhancing the city’s infrastructure while providing opportunities for local youth to positively impact their community.
