The Suva City Council (SCC) is actively working on revitalizing the nightlife in Suva by introducing a broader array of entertainment options beyond just nightclubs. This initiative includes the creation of a new position dedicated to coordinating events and entertainment in the capital. Tevita Boseiwaqa, chairman of the SCC, made this announcement at the handover ceremony for the American Corner at the Carnegie Library in Suva.
Boseiwaqa explained that the council intends to breathe life into public spaces, such as Ratu Sukuna Park and Thurston Gardens, to create a vibrant atmosphere in the city during the nighttime. “We want to ensure that Suva city thrives,” he stated, highlighting the importance of activating these areas after dark.
Despite these efforts, the council is facing challenges regarding safety and public concerns, especially with issues like homelessness and drug use in public spaces. To address these challenges, Boseiwaqa mentioned plans to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Fiji Police Force for enhanced safety measures. While the council recognizes it does not have legislative powers to control homelessness directly, it feels a sense of duty to ensure the wellbeing of the city.
This commitment by the SCC to address nightlife and public safety is echoed in similar past articles that discuss the need for strategic planning to combat social issues, particularly drug-related activities within the city. There is a growing acknowledgment of the complexity of urban challenges and the necessity for collaborative efforts involving local government, police, and community organizations to enhance public safety and quality of life.
The new initiatives present a hopeful opportunity for resuscitating Suva’s nightlife while addressing safety concerns, demonstrating a proactive approach by local authorities. Engaging community stakeholders and law enforcement could lead to a more vibrant, inclusive, and safe environment in Suva, making it an appealing destination for both residents and visitors alike.
