Efforts to support local governance in Fiji are progressing well, with a planned enhancement of 415 traditional leadership roles, leaving 55 more yet to be appointed at the provincial level. This initiative was highlighted by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, during a recent meeting in Sasa, Macuata. The restructuring aims to reinforce the traditional leadership framework, which will greatly benefit the governance of the nation, churches, and the state.

Minister Vasu noted that the administrative framework for community engagement alongside fisheries resources has been established to facilitate the effective management of village chiefs and clan leaders in the Macuata province. Furthermore, region-based consultative committees are being set up, with community-organized focus on service delivery and improving essential services.

The government is also committed to enhancing children’s educational opportunities. They are prioritizing initiatives that will strengthen the local educational framework and the teaching of the iTaukei language and customs in schools. An emphasis on improving public services and community well-being has been made, particularly regarding infrastructure improvements and water supply management.

In line with this, there are ongoing efforts by the Public Works Department to enhance community services. This includes streamlining the works of the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, exploring technological solutions to assist with land reclamation projects, and ensuring support for communities through effective planning.

Minister Vasu reiterated the need for responsible resource management and the sustainable use of assets to secure a more stable and vibrant future for all Fijians. He called upon community members to actively support local initiatives and prioritize the education and welfare of the youth, aiming to build a better tomorrow.

Overall, these developments signal a hopeful commitment to enhancing local governance and strengthening the fabric of communities across Fiji, paving the way for a future of stability, development, and cultural preservation. These aspirations are underscored by the government’s active involvement in addressing critical community needs and fostering an environment where traditional leadership can thrive.
