The Priority Infrastructure Planning (PIP) Report for the redevelopment of Suva’s Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) was officially launched by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday. This report, prepared by a team of technical experts and infrastructure engineers, details the immediate work needed to ensure the hospital continues to serve the community effectively while a longer-term master plan is developed.
Rabuka emphasized the report’s crucial findings, which aim to maintain CWM Hospital amid existing infrastructure challenges. He noted that past neglect in maintenance planning has contributed significantly to the hospital’s current condition, necessitating costly repairs. The Prime Minister stressed the Coalition Government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare quality through modernized facilities, aligning with the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
In addition, the government’s efforts are bolstered by a partnership with Australia. Last year, a funding agreement of $14.7 million was signed between Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald, to support the hospital’s redevelopment. Rabuka expressed gratitude for Australia’s support through the VUVALE Partnership, indicative of a strategic alliance aimed at improving health outcomes for the Fijian population.
Inviting collaboration from hospital staff, community members, and stakeholders, Rabuka concluded his address by underlining the importance of working together to advance these vital infrastructural improvements. This redevelopment project stands as a hopeful testament to improving public health services in Fiji, showcasing a commitment to quality care for all citizens.
