Revitalizing Fiji’s Sugar Industry: A Glimpse into Future Development

Ratu Josaia Niudamu recently addressed Fiji’s sugar industry prospects while expressing his support for the 2024-2025 National Budget during a parliamentary session.

Niudamu acknowledged the absence of funds for the re-establishment of the FSC Penang Sugar Mill but remained hopeful for future development. He noted, “I have observed that no allocation has been made for the re-establishment of the FSC Penang Sugar Mill. However, I am confident that it will be addressed next year, as the Minister for Sugar clearly stated in this House in May.”

He referenced the Minister for Sugar’s promise to complete the mill before the end of their term, indicating a long-term commitment to revitalizing the sugar industry. Niudamu also mentioned the potential procurement of a second-hand mill from China to be set up in Rakiraki, which would bring significant economic benefits to the Ra region. This development aligns with the government’s broader efforts to support agriculture and enhance economic stability in rural areas.

“Every dollar allocated in this budget is shared with a clear intention to benefit all Fijians,” Niudamu emphasized. He urged the government to ensure effective budget implementation so that Fijians can fully benefit from the announced assistance and incentives.
