The Public Works Department (PWD) has officially become a recognized entity within the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services & Transport. Recent efforts have seen the deployment of heavy road construction machinery, prominently marked with “PWD,” to various locations that require urgent attention for road access and upgrades.
Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the poor condition of many rural and maritime roads, attributing the neglect to the previous government. He pointed out that roads not included in the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) inventory were classified as non-FRA roads and typically fell outside the FRA’s maintenance program, a situation that has now changed with the arrival of the Coalition Government.
According to Minister Tuisawau, the reinstatement of the PWD is crucial for ensuring all roads receive the necessary attention. To support this initiative, the government has acquired new road work machinery, which is currently stationed at the Ministry’s Divisional depots located in Suva, Lautoka, and Labasa.
Active construction efforts are already underway in several areas, including Nasereilagi, Nalidi, and Roma in Ra, as well as Naisogo in Naitasiri, Nasealevu in Macuata, and Vanuabalavu in Lau.
The reactivation of the PWD symbolizes a renewed commitment to improving Fiji’s infrastructure, particularly in neglected regions, fostering better access and mobility for local communities.
By investing in road maintenance and infrastructure, the government aims to enhance economic opportunities and the quality of life for residents in these areas, fostering a more connected and accessible Fiji.
