Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, recently visited the Sigatoka Research Station to meet with livestock officers involved in the Embryo Transfer cattle program. During this visit, Tunabuna discussed innovative strategies aimed at enhancing the cattle industry, emphasizing its potential benefits for local farmers.

He praised the officers for their dedication and encouraged them to continue their important research, which is vital for the sector’s development and sustainability. Tunabuna expressed the ministry’s commitment to fostering a thriving and economically viable beef and dairy industry, highlighting the significant role of the Sigatoka research efforts.

The livestock team showcased the use of new technologies, especially the Embryo Transfer program, which involves implanting premium quality embryos into local cows. This process aims to produce breeds that are not only more productive but also better adapted to changing climatic conditions. Agriculture Officer Jovilisi Tabuyaqona explained the procedure, which consists of collecting and fertilizing embryos before transferring them to local cows.

Furthermore, the program prioritizes enhancing cattle nutrition, pasture quality, and housing conditions to promote healthier livestock. Currently, the Sigatoka Research Station oversees a herd of 288 cattle, featuring various breeds such as Senepol, Droughtmaster, Wagyu, F1 Cross, and Brown Swiss.

This initiative serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts to uplift Fiji’s agricultural sector, aiming for sustainability and growth that ultimately benefits local communities. With such promising advancements in livestock management, the future of Fiji’s beef and dairy industry looks bright.
