Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, spoke candidly about the challenging state of Fiji’s health and education infrastructure inherited by the current government. Addressing attendees at a post-budget breakfast in Suva, he explained that years of neglect have left public facilities, particularly in the healthcare sector, in a deplorable condition.

Prasad recalled visiting Kadavu and witnessing firsthand the disrepair of the local hospital, which has been deteriorating for over a decade. He also mentioned the Nausori Health Centre, highlighting its restoration with assistance from the New Zealand government, which he gratefully acknowledged.

In his speech, Prasad emphasized that the government has already undertaken 29 maintenance and related projects in the health sector over the past two and a half years, with more improvements planned. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with international partners, such as Australia, that have been crucial in smoothing the path toward necessary reforms.

While he noted ongoing concerns regarding the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital, he reassured the public that an independent audit has been commissioned to assess its conditions, confirming that the hospital’s current challenges stem from years of neglect under previous administrations.

Prasad has urged the public not to overlook the substantial progress made in such a short time, while recognizing that further work lies ahead. By fostering transparency and partnerships, he hopes to restore public confidence in essential services. The government’s continued focus on infrastructure signifies its dedication to improving health outcomes for all Fijians, presenting a hopeful outlook toward the future.

This ongoing commitment to revamping the healthcare system, including plans for significant investments in infrastructure and a new national hospital, reflects a proactive approach aimed at revitalizing Fiji’s public services and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
