Cunningham, a neighborhood in Nasinu near Suva, has been flagged as a red zone for drugs and crime, raising serious concerns among local leaders. Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, who has roots in the community, emphasized the urgency of tackling these pressing issues. He described Cunningham as “home to me,” highlighting his personal connection and commitment to making a difference.
In response to the escalating drug crisis, Mr. Vosarogo is spearheading a proactive initiative designed to address the problem directly. Collaborating with the Fiji Police Force and local church leaders, the plan focuses on engaging local youth and steering them away from drugs and crime through diverse avenues such as sports and mentorship opportunities.
Plans are in motion to construct a new sports facility that will include a rugby ground, netball and volleyball courts, and a basketball facility. However, according to Vosarogo, the core objective is to rebuild the social fabric of the community.
“In the coming week, we will hold sessions with speakers addressing drug and crime issues directly with the youth,” he stated, adding that the initiative will culminate in a community volleyball tournament aimed at fostering engagement and promoting positive activities.
Mr. Vosarogo strongly believes that the fight against drugs must commence at home. He urged parents, especially fathers, to take ownership of their family’s safety, stressing the collective responsibility of families and communities in confronting these challenges. Special sessions for fathers will be organized to instill values of responsibility and family protection from the threats posed by drug use.
“This isn’t just a community issue, it’s a family issue,” he remarked. His call to action resonates deeply with similar sentiments expressed by other community leaders in Fiji, who are advocating for families and communities to collaborate in efforts to combat the drug crisis.
Despite the daunting challenges, the initiative offers a hopeful perspective, suggesting that revitalizing community relationships and focusing on youth engagement can create a safer and healthier environment in Cunningham and beyond. By harnessing the collective strength of families, local leaders, and institutions, there is a path forward to mitigate the impacts of drug abuse and foster a brighter future for the youth of Fiji.
