Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has urged Fijians to take responsibility for the upkeep of the newly redeveloped Ratu Sukuna Park, which was completed at a cost of $7 million. During the park’s opening ceremony on Monday evening, Kamikamica highlighted the significance of preserving the park as a space of comfort and pride for future generations.
He noted that the renovation of the park marked a significant transformation from its previous state, showcasing the nation’s advancement and dedication to urban renewal. The newly upgraded park now boasts modern amenities, including a new podium structure, decorative night lighting, contemporary park furniture, a digital screen with surround sound, and enhanced landscaping that fuses hardscape with greenery.
Kamikamica added that the new water feature complements the monument of Ratu Sukuna, creating a peaceful atmosphere throughout the park. He described the park as more than just a green space, but rather an oasis within the busy city, offering peace, tranquility, creativity, and a fresh start.
“This is a place for everyone to pause, connect with loved ones, and redefine their paths in life,” he remarked. He emphasized that parks like Ratu Sukuna play a pivotal role in the health and well-being of communities, serving as venues for families to gather, children to play, and individuals to seek solace in nature.
These recreational areas contribute to the overall livability of cities, transforming them from mere places to live and work into environments where residents can truly thrive. Kamikamica concluded by encouraging collective efforts to further develop Suva as a city intertwined with nature, maintaining its reputation as one of the premier cities for the environment on the Global Cities Index.
