Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has urged all Fijians to take responsibility for the care of the newly redeveloped Ratu Sukuna Park, which was constructed at a cost of $7 million.
During the park’s opening ceremony on Monday evening, Mr. Kamikamica highlighted the significance of maintaining the park as a source of comfort and pride for future generations. He noted that the park’s redevelopment represents a transformation from its original state and reflects the nation’s progress and dedication to urban renewal.
“This upgraded park now features modern amenities including a new podium structure, designer night lights, contemporary park furniture, a digital screen with surround sound, and an enhanced landscape that integrates hardscape with green space,” Mr. Kamikamica stated.
He added that the new water feature enhances Ratu Sukuna’s monument, creating a calm atmosphere within the park.
“This park represents more than just a green space. It serves as an oasis amid our busy city, offering peace, tranquility, creativity, and a fresh start. It is a place where everyone can pause, connect with loved ones, and chart a new course in life,” he said.
Mr. Kamikamica asserted that parks like Ratu Sukuna are crucial for the health and well-being of communities.
“They provide areas for families to come together, for children to play, and for individuals to find comfort in nature. These spaces are vital to the livability of our cities, transforming them from mere places to work and reside into environments where people can flourish,” he explained.
He called on the community to collaborate in enhancing Suva’s reputation as a city immersed in nature and maintaining its standing as one of the top cities for the environment according to the Global Cities Index.
