A significant redevelopment project at Govind Park in Ba is set to reach completion by April, according to Moshim Khan, the special administrator of the Ba Town Council. As part of the initiative, contracts for the second phase of the project, valued at $8.3 million, were awarded to two contractors, Western Builders Ltd and Heritage Fiji, with work commencing in August of last year.
Khan reported that the new facilities at Govind Park will enhance its seating capacity to 9,000, not including the embankment, which will be addressed in a subsequent phase of the redevelopment. He mentioned that adverse weather conditions have caused delays, but he remains optimistic about completing the project by mid-April.
Once the Govind Park project is finalized, plans will move forward to develop a market arcade, ensuring the Town Council remains focused on completing substantial projects without being overwhelmed by multiple simultaneous undertakings. The community has been eagerly anticipating the park’s completion since 2016.
In addition to hosting local events, the revamped Govind Park is expected to attract international competitions, including the IDC as expressed by the Fiji Football Association, which aims to host this year in Ba. This is a positive development not only for the park but also for local sports culture, providing opportunities for rugby and soccer events once the new facilities are operational.
Furthermore, following the restoration of Govind Park, plans for new constructions, including a mall by Ratsun City and developments by RB Patel, are in the works, pending resolution of tenant-related issues.
Overall, the redevelopment of Govind Park represents a hopeful revitalization for the Ba community, promising not only to restore a vital sports venue but also to enhance social engagements and economic opportunities across the region.
