Reverend Lal’s Inspiring Journey: A Sermon That Sparks a Movement

Reverend Lal Mohammed has become a prominent figure on social media, with his impactful sermon also gaining traction on the ChatFiji forum, which often features controversial content. His message has sparked reflection not only within the Methodist Church but among all Christian denominations.

During his sermon, Reverend Lal utilized three iTaukei dialects—Lauan, Nadroga, and Bauan—alongside English. He met with reporters on Friday at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

When asked about his knowledge of the iTaukei language, Reverend Lal explained that he was raised in Lau, where he initially encountered the Lauan dialect. Following his family’s move to Nadroga, he learned the Nadroga dialect and later embraced Bauan. Growing up in Nakalavo, where his father was a lay preacher, provided him with a foundation in the iTaukei language both in church and everyday life. Despite having a Muslim background, his family has always identified as Methodists.

Regarding his sermon preparation, Reverend Lal shared that he focused on the theme of a conference by exploring relevant biblical verses. He emphasized the importance of addressing the spiritual challenges people face in contemporary society, believing these should be brought to light. The Holy Spirit inspired him to convey truths that would help restore the image of Christ, especially within the largest denomination in Fiji.

Reverend Lal expressed gratitude for the opportunity to preach about Jesus and encourage reflection on embodying His image. He also revealed that becoming a reverend was a long-held desire, which grew stronger through experiences working on farms and in garment factories, as well as accompanying his father on preaching duties. This led him to a calling to serve the Indo-Fijian community.

In terms of his church service, he has ministered in various locations including Sigatoka, Navua, Nadi Circuit, Labasa, Rakiraki, Dilkusha Indian Circuit, and currently the Dudley Circuit.

On a personal note, Reverend Lal shared that when he married his wife, she was Hindu, but she later converted to Christianity and dedicated her life to Jesus. They have a son and a daughter together.
