A significant investment of $4 million is underway to enhance the water supply infrastructure at the Nasivi raw water pump station in Vatukoula, addressing longstanding issues faced by nearby communities experiencing low water supply. Minister for Infrastructure and Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, announced in Parliament that this initiative is part of a comprehensive long-term strategy by the Water Authority of Fiji aimed at resolving persistent water supply challenges in areas such as Mataniwai Top, Balata Back Rd, Korovou Rd 1 to 4, Yaladra Top, and Malela Naba 3.
These communities rely primarily on the Malela reservoir, which often falls short during critical water level declines. Tuisawau highlighted that this decline is frequently attributed to reduced inflow from the Nasivi water pump station, coupled with diminished water production at the Vatukoula treatment plant. Such issues underscore the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades that enhance the reliability of water services amid climate-related disruptions.
The Water Authority has engaged professional engineers to design a new intake structure at Nasivi. This infrastructure will be engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and flooding, which currently contribute to blockages and reduced inflow to the treatment plant. Once complete, the upgraded intake is expected to significantly improve the reliability of water supply for the affected communities, reducing the frequency and severity of disruptions.
In parallel, past efforts observed in regions such as the Suva-Nausori corridor have seen similar infrastructure projects aimed at relieving water supply shortages, such as the installation of new treatment facilities and pipeline upgrades. These developments signal a holistic commitment by local authorities to tackle water supply challenges effectively, which can foster improved quality of life and resilience in these communities.
The initiatives underway reflect a hopeful outlook for the residents, promising a more stable and dependable water supply system that will enhance community well-being and mitigate future challenges. Investment in such infrastructure not only addresses immediate circumstances but also aims to lay the groundwork for sustainable water management as population demands grow.
