Concerns regarding the non-functionality of clinical incinerators at health facilities in the Northern region have been raised, highlighting a pressing need for better waste management solutions. Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, recently commented on the situation, particularly referencing the urgent need for a clinical incinerator in Labasa. During his visit to various subdivisions, he observed that many incinerators, including those in Seaqaqa and Vaturova, were in disrepair due to a lack of maintenance.

As a result, health facilities must transport all clinical waste to Labasa for disposal, leading to logistical challenges and increased costs. Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the intention to establish a larger incineration facility in Labasa, which would centralize the disposal of clinical waste from surrounding areas. Plans for further decentralization into other provinces are also on the horizon, aiming to enhance clinical waste management capabilities throughout the region.

This situation parallels broader issues related to medical waste management in Fiji, as detailed in the nation’s National Development Plan. The document underscores the significant health and environmental risks of improper medical waste disposal and advocates for sustainable management practices to address these concerns.

In light of these challenges, efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure are emerging. The Australian government has previously pledged funding for a new medical incinerator at the Labasa Hospital, demonstrating international support in tackling waste management issues that affect public health.

The ongoing dialogues and proposed plans signal a committed effort towards improving waste disposal practices, which could enhance environmental safety while also bolstering public health. There is hope that these advancements will lead to a more efficient and sustainable waste management system in the Northern region of Fiji, benefiting both communities and the environment.
