The Suva City Council is embarking on an initiative to revamp its nightlife with a focus not only on entertainment but also on addressing pressing social issues such as homelessness and drug use. City leaders are formulating a strategy that combines safety, inclusivity, and economic opportunities, aiming to transform Suva into a vibrant nightlife destination that caters to everyone.
Special Administrator Tevita Boseiwaqa emphasizes the importance of diversifying entertainment options and enhancing safety measures. “You have the nightclubs, but it’s the one for everybody. That’s just in the evening and so on. So, we have Ratu Sukuna Park there. And now we are working on Thurston Garden. So first of all, we have to make sure that it’s safe. And we are working towards that,” he stated.
This revitalization plan reflects a conscious effort to create a nightlife scene that is welcoming to all, extending beyond just bars and clubs. The council is aiming to activate public spaces, making them safer and more appealing, while ensuring effective crowd control through increased visibility and security.
While the plan is ambitious, it also acknowledges the challenges presented by current social issues, including drug-related activities. Previous articles have noted that the council has struggled with drug use and safety in public spaces, like parks and nighttime vendors. In significant moves, the council is expected to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force to enhance safety measures and address these social challenges more effectively.
Engaging community stakeholders in this initiative could foster a more inclusive and vibrant Suva. While challenges remain, the proactive approach of the council offers hope for not only enhancing nightlife but also improving public safety and addressing social concerns. The combination of entertainment diversification, safety enhancements, and community input sets a promising foundation for transforming Suva into a thriving urban hub that supports all residents.
