Revamping Suva’s Bus Stand: Vendors Ready for Change!

The Suva Western Bus Stand is undergoing significant improvements with the removal of 23 bean cart stalls that have been in place for over 20 years. This development is kicking off a long-awaited modernization project aimed at revitalizing the area and creating better business opportunities for local vendors.

Rakesh Kumar, a stall owner who has run his bean cart and juice stall for two decades, expressed his support for the changes after productive discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC). Kumar stated, “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months, and they’ve assured us that our spots will remain after the rebuild. It’s time to let go of the old structures and embrace new, modern models that will help grow our businesses.”

The SCC indicated that the redevelopment is driven by concerns related to hygiene and reports of illicit activities in the area. The new stalls are set to feature contemporary designs that mirror those found at the Suva Municipal Market, creating a more comfortable and appealing business environment for vendors and customers alike.

Another long-standing vendor, Filisita Sameke, who has been in the trade for over ten years, noted her satisfaction with the council’s proactive measures. She remarked, “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient. The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers.”

With the renovations expected to improve the overall atmosphere of the bus stand, a safer and more hygienic space for both vendors and customers is anticipated. The developers have assured the vendors that the construction will be completed within two to three months, with a promise of minimal disruption during the process. Vendors, currently paying around $32.70 weekly for their spaces, feel optimistic about the long-term benefits of this investment.

In summary, this redevelopment initiative is poised to significantly enhance the Suva Western Bus Stand, benefiting both vendors and their customers through improved infrastructure. The community can look forward to a revitalized space that fosters a better business environment and enhances the overall experience for all who visit.
