Revamping St Giles: A New Era for Fiji’s Oldest Hospital

The infrastructure of St Giles Hospital has experienced considerable deterioration over the years, according to Minister for Health Dr Atonio Lalabalavu. During his address to Parliament, he noted that St Giles Hospital is among the oldest hospitals in Fiji, having been in operation since 1884.

Dr Lalabalavu highlighted the many climatic and operational challenges the facility has faced and the significant wear and tear on its infrastructure. He acknowledged that the hospital is increasingly tasked with accommodating a growing number of patients, which has heightened demands on its facilities. These patients present a range of issues, including acute and chronic psychiatric illnesses, substance abuse, and forensic psychiatric cases.

He mentioned that past infrastructure enhancements have been aimed at tackling the evolving needs of patient demographics. Over the last two years, efforts have been made in collaboration with development partners and through budgetary allocations to upgrade various areas, including the Women’s Ward, Moala Ward, and the administrative building.

Another major project involved the sealing of roads and the carpark within the hospital grounds at a cost exceeding $235,000. The roadway had been neglected for several years, leading to discomfort for patients and damage to vehicles, as well as challenges for staff living nearby.

Earlier this year, a new security fence was constructed behind the men’s ward at a cost of around $13,000 to enhance the safety of the admission area, as was previously reported in the media. The ministry has also earmarked additional funding for minor repairs and renovations at the hospital in the current financial year.

Dr Lalabalavu stated that the ministry is in discussions with a partner and a donor organization to support the development of a new facility, aimed at enabling the hospital to adopt the latest treatment methods and improve mental health services in the country.
