The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens is enhancing its tournament experience with new bylaws set to take place from December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. The tournament director, Solo Finau, revealed that a bonus points system has been implemented to benefit all participating teams.
The organizers aim to attract 80 teams across four tiers: Tier One for championship teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for Under-19 teams. Finau emphasized that the revamped competition structure is designed not only to stimulate both player development and financial benefits for the teams but also to rekindle interest in sevens tournaments throughout the nation.
Finau pointed out that the format encourages local players to leverage their skills in challenging situations. He cited examples from global competitions, suggesting that strategies like drop goals should come naturally to competitors.
Additionally, the tournament is introducing instant rewards, incentivizing exceptional performances right after matches. Players who score individual tries that start from their “In-Goal space” will receive $100. Team captains will also be rewarded $100 for team tries that span the field. Other cash incentives include prizes for the teams with the most converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals throughout the tournament.
Teams that can beat or match Alosio Naduva’s 6.78-second record for fastest team try will also receive $100, motivating players to push their limits.
Sanctioned by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), the tournament’s launch is scheduled for December 6, heralding an exciting event for rugby enthusiasts.
This initiative not only enhances the competitive edge of the tournament but also significantly contributes to the grassroots development of rugby in Fiji, promising a future filled with potential for aspiring athletes.
