The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development is initiating a thorough assessment of the Integrated Rural Development Framework (IRDF) in Fiji. This important review is aimed at enhancing the coordination and integration of rural development strategies and programs throughout the nation.
Aligned with the Fiji National Development Plan (NDP) for 2025-2029, which prioritizes rural development, this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable growth and resilience in rural and outer island communities. The review of the IRDF is a critical step in paving the way for societal and economic development opportunities for these areas.
In collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme’s Governance for Resilient Developments in the Pacific (Gov4Res) Project, this assessment is designed to better align rural development strategies with national policies and to directly address the specific needs and challenges faced by rural communities. The Ministry aims to ensure that these areas not only benefit from Fiji’s overall development objectives but also actively contribute to them.
The ultimate goal of this review is to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive National Rural Development Policy (NDRP). This new policy aims to uplift rural households from poverty and tackle issues related to access to safe drinking water, sanitation, electricity, transportation, secure employment, education, and vulnerability to disasters and climate change.
A key feature of this review is to streamline rural development initiatives across various government sectors, ensuring resources are effectively directed to meet the unique requirements of rural areas. By prioritizing local voices, the IRDF will address critical issues such as essential service access and sustainable livelihoods.
Fiji’s rural and maritime regions are abundant in natural, cultural, and human resources. By revitalizing existing development structures, the Ministry seeks to unlock the significant economic and social potential within these communities, fostering opportunities for growth, investment, and innovation.
Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, emphasized that the review is a vital opportunity to forge a more inclusive and forward-thinking development framework that recognizes rural communities as key players in Fiji’s progress. By engaging with rural communities and adapting strategies to meet their realities, substantial strides can be made toward resilient and sustainable growth.
The Ministry encourages all stakeholders, including community leaders, non-profit organizations, development partners, and the private sector, to participate in this review process. Nationwide consultations will commence, starting in the Central Division from November 14 to 15.
This initiative offers a hopeful perspective for the future of rural communities in Fiji, with the potential for significant socio-economic advancements and improved quality of life. By focusing on local development and engaging communities, there is a strong foundation for a thriving and inclusive society.
