The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development is set to undertake a thorough assessment of the Integrated Rural Development Framework (IRDF), marking a pivotal advancement in fostering better coordination and integration of rural development initiatives throughout Fiji. This initiative comes in response to the Fiji National Development Plan (NDP) 2025–2029, which identifies rural development as a primary focus, aligning with the government’s goal of promoting sustainable growth and resilience in rural and outer island communities.
The review of the IRDF is critical to achieving socioeconomic advancements for these areas. It is being supported by the United Nations Development Programme’s Governance for Resilient Developments in the Pacific Project, which will work to synchronize rural development strategies with national planning objectives while addressing the specific needs of rural populations.
Through this review process, the Ministry aims to lay the foundation for the establishment of a National Rural Development Policy (NDRP). This new policy is expected to tackle various issues faced by rural households, such as poverty, access to safe water, sanitation, electricity, transportation, and educational opportunities, as well as the impacts of disasters and climate change.
The review intends to harmonize rural development efforts across different government sectors, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to meet the unique needs of rural communities. By prioritizing local voices, the IRDF review aims to address critical issues related to access to essential services and sustainable livelihoods.
Fiji’s rural and maritime areas are abundant in natural, cultural, and human resources. By revitalizing development strategies, the Ministry hopes to unlock substantial economic and social potential, fostering growth, investment, and innovation. Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the significance of this review, stating it offers a chance to create an inclusive development framework that positions rural communities as vital contributors to Fiji’s progress.
The Ministry encourages all stakeholders—including community leaders, civil society members, development partners, and the private sector—to participate in the consultation process, which will kick off nationwide with sessions in the Central Division on November 14 and 15.
This initiative not only presents an opportunity for growth but also represents a commitment to inclusivity and sustainability that can greatly benefit Fiji’s rural populations. The focus on collaboration and adaptation to community needs underscores the hope for a prosperous and resilient future for these vital areas.
