Revamping Rugby: New Plans for Sports Grounds Unveiled

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has requested quotes from contractors to enhance various sports facilities nationwide. Minister Jese Saukuru indicated that an approximate budget of $50,000 has been allocated for the improvements of selected sports grounds.

These facilities are primarily used by rugby teams for major provincial competitions. Saukuru remarked, “We are currently in the process of this initiative. Our aim is to gather quotations from contractors willing to partner with us.”

He emphasized that the focus is on upgrading existing sites to improve their conditions, including implementing proper drainage systems and elevating the grounds, many of which are in poor shape due to water and rain issues. “We also want to ensure that seating arrangements for spectators are adequate,” he added.

This initiative is part of the funding outlined in the 2024-2025 budget. “Our goal is to enhance the conditions of these grounds, particularly school facilities that are utilized for provincial games. Many provincial rugby teams lack permanent home grounds; for instance, Naitasiri, Bua, Macuata, Kadavu, and Lau do not have designated fields,” he noted.

Mr. Saukuru acknowledged that while they may not be able to renovate all grounds this year, efforts will continue in the coming years.
