Work on upgrading the Nadi bus stand is set to commence by the end of the month, as announced by Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa. The project will cost approximately $150,000 and is expected to be completed before the end of the current financial year.
In Parliament, Minister Nalumisa also shared updates on other local infrastructure projects. He indicated that the Lautoka swimming pool is on track for completion by the end of the 2025-2026 financial year, while the second phase of Ba’s Govind Park redevelopment will wrap up before the start of the next financial year. These facilities are deemed essential for hosting local sporting events and are anticipated to stimulate economic activity in the area.
Notably, the Minister highlighted that the Lautoka City Council is also working to upgrade the bus stand, which is projected to be finished in the upcoming financial year, following recent improvements to public conveniences at the site. Additionally, the Rakiraki market upgrade is currently in the tender process.
Minister Nalumisa stressed the importance of taking responsibility for existing issues and stated that the government is dedicated to fixing infrastructure challenges. A comprehensive review of the Local Government Act is being initiated to empower municipal councils with enhanced decision-making capabilities, thereby increasing efficiency and accountability. He added that modernized town planning regulations and partnerships with the private sector are also on the table to facilitate crucial investment in municipal projects.
These developments underscore the government’s commitment to improving local infrastructure, which not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the groundwork for long-term community engagement and economic growth. As these projects come to fruition, there is a hopeful outlook that they will boost recreational opportunities and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
