Revamping Law Enforcement: Fiji’s Bold ‘Police Reset’ Initiative

Crime is evolving, and criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, necessitating a new police strategy, according to Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua. He made these remarks during a recent address to law enforcement personnel at the Fiji Police Force’s 150th anniversary parade in Nasova.

Minister Tikoduadua introduced the concept of the “Police Reset,” emphasizing that it represents more than just a strategy; it is a commitment to transform the operations of the Fiji Police Force in a rapidly changing environment. He highlighted the evolving nature of crime, which now includes sophisticated cybercrime, organized crime, and the illicit drug trade, presenting challenges that are more complex than ever before.

To address these challenges, Tikoduadua stressed the need for adaptation. The Police Reset aims to equip officers with the necessary skills, tools, and resources to effectively respond to modern threats. It seeks to create a police force that is agile, responsive, and accountable to the public, while also fostering deep connections with the communities they serve.

Tikoduadua pointed out that this initiative is not about maintaining the status quo but rather rethinking methods of protection and service. Implementing the Reset will require investment in technology, equipment, and personnel.

He underscored the importance of training, professional development, and a renewed focus on integrity and service. The initiative will also place a strong emphasis on community policing, recognizing that true safety comes not only from enforcing the law but also from building trust and cooperation with the communities they are dedicated to protecting.
