Revamping Fiji’s St Giles Hospital: A New Era for Mental Health Services?

The increasing demand for services at the St Giles Psychiatric Hospital in Suva, the only psychiatric facility in Fiji, has led to a pressing need for infrastructure enhancements. Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu highlighted that St. Giles Hospital is one of the oldest in the country, having been in operation since 1884.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that the hospital is experiencing a growing number of patients across all age groups, resulting in considerable pressure on its infrastructure. He acknowledged the facility’s long history of weathering various climatic and operational challenges, which has contributed to its substantial wear and tear over the years.

To address these issues, the ministry has sought assistance from a partner and donor organization to explore the establishment of a new facility. This would enable the hospital to adopt modern treatment methods and enhance mental health services in Fiji. The proposed facility would allow for a broader range of specialized services, including those related to addiction, psychiatry for children and adolescents, geriatric psychiatry, and various therapeutic options such as group therapy, psychodrama, lithium level testing, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and electroconvulsive therapy.

The government remains dedicated to improving mental health services within the country. Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the hospital’s capacity, while also acknowledging existing gaps in post-treatment support for substance abuse. He reassured that the government is actively seeking partnerships with development organizations to enhance long-term treatment options in this critical area.

The ministry is committed to ensuring that adequate care is provided during the acute phase of treatment while continuing to explore solutions for better post-treatment outcomes.
