The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development is initiating an extensive review of the Integrated Rural Development Framework (IRDF) in Fiji. This effort aims to enhance the coordination and integration of rural development planning and programs across the nation. Recognized as a key priority in the Fiji National Development Plan (NDP) 2025 – 2029, the development of rural areas aligns with the government’s commitment to foster sustainable growth and resilience within rural and outer island communities.

Strengthening the IRDF is crucial to achieving this objective, serving as a roadmap for socioeconomic development for rural populations. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme through the Governance for Resilient Developments in the Pacific Project, the review aims to align rural development strategies with national policies while addressing the unique needs and priorities of rural communities.

The Ministry’s goal is to ensure that rural and maritime areas both benefit from and actively participate in Fiji’s wider development endeavors. A key outcome of this review will be the establishment of a National Rural Development Policy (NDRP), which aims to uplift rural households from poverty. This new policy will focus on improving access to essential services such as safe drinking water, sanitation, electricity, transportation, and addressing employment, education, and climate-related challenges.

The review is expected to harmonize rural development initiatives across various government sectors, ensuring that resources are effectively utilized to meet the specific needs of these areas. By valuing local voices, the IRDF’s review will tackle urgent issues such as access to vital services and sustainable livelihoods.

Fiji’s rural and maritime regions boast significant natural, cultural, and human resources, and the Ministry’s revitalization efforts aim to capitalize on this potential, generating opportunities for economic growth and innovation. Permanent Secretary Isoa Talemaibua highlighted that this review represents a chance to create an inclusive development framework that positions rural communities as integral to Fiji’s advancement. By engaging with the aspirations of these communities, significant strides can be made toward achieving resilient and sustainable development.

The Ministry welcomes participation from all stakeholders, including community leaders, civil society, development partners, and the private sector, as they work to reinforce the essential role of rural communities in Fiji’s prosperity. Nationwide consultations for the review will kick off in the Central Division from November 14 to 15.

This initiative not only represents a step forward for rural development in Fiji but also reflects a commitment to empowering local communities to play a significant role in shaping their future. The positive outcomes anticipated from this review could lead to improved living standards and greater resilience in the face of challenges, ultimately benefiting all of Fiji.
