Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently undertaking a two-day visit to the Northern Division of Fiji to assess the proposed upgrades to the region’s roadways as part of the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is joined by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.
This significant initiative is backed by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is positioned as a pivotal element of BRI’s offerings in Fiji.
During the visit, Prime Minister Rabuka underscored the necessity of involving local communities in the planning and execution of roadworks. This approach aims not only to improve connectivity but also to create job opportunities for locals during construction.
Key areas inspected included 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road, stretching from Bua to Nasolo, and 35 kilometers of the Nabalebale to Dogoru section on the Wailevu West Coast Road. Accompanying the Prime Minister was Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, who shared insights into the project’s technical and logistical challenges.
Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Provincial Administrator Jovesa Naqarikau. The briefing highlighted the region’s economic potential, which is anticipated to receive a substantial boost from enhanced road infrastructure.
Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, noting its crucial role in fortifying infrastructure and fostering economic growth in the region. He remarked that the upgraded roads are likely to invigorate sectors such as tourism and renewable energy initiatives, including hydropower, while simultaneously improving access for rural communities.
This project presents a hopeful perspective for the Northern Division, as it not only promises to improve transportation and infrastructure but also aims to uplift local economies and foster employment opportunities. Overall, the collaboration between Fiji and China underscores a commitment to development that could enhance the quality of life for many residents in the area.
