Revamping Education: Australia Supports Fiji’s Curriculum Transformation

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has pledged its support for the review of Fiji’s education curriculum, which will occur alongside Australia’s own curriculum review.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro informed Parliament this week that the ministry recognizes the necessity for a curriculum review, with DFAT offering its assistance in this endeavor.

He emphasized that improving the education curriculum is a priority, particularly to facilitate a smoother transition for students moving from secondary education to university. “I was made aware of the need to rework the education curriculum to ensure students transition effectively from secondary school to higher education,” he stated. “This is especially important in subjects like mathematics, physics, and computer science. The innovation and transformation of the curriculum from Early Childhood Education (ECE) to senior secondary is a key focus for the ministry, and we are actively working on this review.”

Minister Radrodro noted that as the curriculum review progresses, there is an expectation for the enhancement of teachers’ skills as well. He mentioned discussions with DFAT about establishing a platform for teacher upskilling through digital training assessments. The ministry has also initiated conversations with other bilateral partners regarding support for online learning for both educators and students, collaborating with DFAT, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and various other organizations.
