The Public Works Department (PWD) is gearing up for an active role following its reinstatement by the government last year. After being closed by the previous administration, PWD has made a comeback over the last few months, and its operations were significantly enhanced with the recent delivery of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers in Suva.
The delivery of the heavy machinery and trucks took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, with officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport in attendance. Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the Ministry, emphasized that the timely addition of these machines will bolster infrastructure development and capacity building.
Baleilevuka stated that the new equipment is part of a broader initiative to improve road standards and enhance accessibility for economic activities. He noted that these machines would be instrumental in conducting road construction and maintenance, especially in rural and remote areas.
The ministry received the following new equipment:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck
The total value of the eight machines is $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the Ministry has been allocated $5 million dedicated to upgrading and enhancing rural roads. Baleilevuka mentioned that the newly acquired equipment and vehicles will play a crucial role in upcoming projects.
