The RC Manubhai Nataleira Sevens is set to revitalize its tournament with new by-laws aimed at enhancing the competitive experience. Scheduled to take place from December 12 to 14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, the tournament will feature an innovative bonus points system intended to benefit all participating teams.
Tournament director Solo Finau expressed enthusiasm about the modifications, anticipating the participation of 80 teams across four tiers. Tier One will showcase champion teams, while Tier Two will feature regular teams. Tier Three is designated for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four will highlight the Under-19 competition.
Finau emphasized the importance of creating engaging and financially beneficial experiences for players and teams alike. He mentioned that the revised competition format is designed to prepare local players for high-pressure situations, highlighting that successful teams in World Cups often relied on drop goals for victory. He encouraged teams to leverage their natural skills and instincts during gameplay.
A distinctive aspect of this tournament is the implementation of instant rewards, which will be presented immediately after matches. Players scoring a coast-to-coast individual try from their own in-goal area will receive $100, while team tries will also reward the captain with $100. Additional cash incentives will be offered for teams based on various scoring categories throughout the tournament, including the most accumulated converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals.
Moreover, teams who match or surpass the record of 6.78 seconds set by Alosio Naduva for the fastest team try will also be rewarded with $100.
Sanctioned by the Fiji Rugby Union, the tournament is set to be officially launched on December 6, paving the way for an exciting showcasing of talent and sportsmanship in Fijian rugby.
This new tournament format not only aims to enhance players’ skills and competitive spirit but also offers an exciting opportunity for fans to engage with the sport. With these innovative changes, the tournament promises to be a valuable experience for both participants and supporters alike.
