A traditional Camakau race took place on Fulaga Island in Lau, marking the first event of its kind in 20 years. This significant race was organized to rekindle the traditional boat-building knowledge that has been handed down through generations, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage in the Fijian community.

The event was designed to unite the people of Fulaga, encouraging collaboration among the four villages within the district. Participants utilized timber from the island’s forests to construct their canoes, underscoring the race’s commitment to sustainability and promoting resilience within the community.

The Coalition Government supported the event through the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and the Ministry of Information, aiming to celebrate and promote Fiji’s rich culture and indigenous skills. Prizes for the race were generously sponsored by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, and Heritage.

The Camakau Race, lasting three weeks, not only highlighted traditional sailing techniques but also provided a joyful occasion for community bonding and the revitalization of Fijian maritime traditions. The successful revival of this event promises to strengthen cultural ties and enhance appreciation for traditional practices among the younger generations.
