During the Fiji Achievement in Media Excellence Awards (FAME) held at Novotel in Lami, Rosi Doviverata, the president of the Fiji Media Association, inspired young female journalists to assert their voices and challenge traditional boundaries. She emphasized the importance of confidence, urging them never to seek permission to express their rightful place in journalism.
Doviverata took a moment to acknowledge the resilience shown by media professionals during challenging times under the leadership of former Prime Minister Bainimarama. She articulated that the return of the awards symbolizes not just a celebration of past achievements but also a renewed sense of pride and excellence in Fijian journalism.
Reflecting on the period from 2007 to 2025, Doviverata remarked on how the media industry in Fiji has emerged stronger, highlighting the legacy of The Fiji Times in maintaining independent journalism despite significant challenges. She commended various media organizations for their perseverance and dedication to keeping the narrative of Fiji alive throughout turbulent times, thanking them for their hard work, integrity, and commitment.
As a co-founder of “Women in Media Fiji,” Doviverata expressed pride in the growth of the movement, which had its first national conference this year. The conference brought women from across Fiji and the Pacific together to discuss vital topics such as leadership, well-being, funding opportunities, and sports journalism within the industry.
She ended her speech with a call to action, encouraging media colleagues to push for deeper reporting and hold leaders accountable. Doviverata underlined that excellence in journalism not only serves to inform the public but also acts as a foundation for the nation’s health—socially, politically, and in public welfare. She reminded attendees that media is not just a profession; it is a public trust and a service to the nation.
In a hopeful tone, Doviverata congratulated all nominees and winners of the awards, signaling a positive future for journalism in Fiji as it continues to navigate new challenges and opportunities.
