The permanent secretary of the Environment Ministry, Dr. Sivendra Michael, emphasized the importance of transforming people’s attitudes toward plastic usage. He noted that one effective approach to mitigate plastic pollution is embracing traditional knowledge and practices.
Dr. Michael stated that raising awareness and fostering internal motivation are crucial for altering perspectives on plastic usage. He explained, “A behavior shift is necessary, and it can only occur if individuals understand the impact of plastics on their lives.”
He pointed out that many plastic users are unaware of the consequences, highlighting the need for simple discussions at the household level to illustrate how improper disposal affects marine life and everyday living.
Dr. Michael urged a return to limited plastic use, reminiscent of past practices, advocating for the revival of traditional methods utilizing local materials to integrate into daily life. He remarked, “Our dependence on plastic is a construct we’ve created, and it’s essential to collaborate in addressing this issue.”
Additionally, he mentioned the ongoing Fiji National Symposium on Plastic Pollution, which began yesterday at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat. This event aims to unite stakeholders to explore solutions for reducing the significant amount of plastic waste that accumulates at the Naboro Landfill.
