The Consumer Council of Fiji has received numerous complaints from consumers expressing concerns over a lack of transparency from certain retailers and service providers. Chief Executive Officer Seema Shandil noted that a significant issue raised is the failure to properly disclose crucial changes in policies, including terms of service, return policies, and associated fees. This issue is particularly troubling when changes occur without adequate communication, leaving consumers bewildered and frustrated as they navigate unexpected new rules.

One recent example involved the sudden cancellation of a consumer’s VISA credit card by a bank that had altered its policy without informing customers beforehand. Shandil emphasized that it is crucial for providers to communicate changes clearly and promptly, ensuring that consumers can make well-informed decisions and are not caught off guard.

These concerns echo previous complaints recorded by the Consumer Council, showcasing a broader trend of rising issues related to consumer protection in Fiji. In a recent report, the Council indicated a surge in complaints related to various aspects, including food safety and deceptive marketing practices. The increase in complaints aligns with the annual shopping spikes seen around holidays, particularly Easter, when many families engage in extensive purchasing.

Shandil’s call for improved transparency in communication resonates with ongoing discussions about ethical business practices. The Council has consistently urged traders to prioritize honesty and clarity over profit margins, particularly during peak shopping times when consumer vigilance is critical.

This proactive stance taken by the Consumer Council provides a roadmap for potential improvement in the retail landscape, linking consumer rights advocacy with enhanced business practices. Increased transparency and accountability from retailers could foster a more trustworthy shopping environment, ultimately benefiting both consumers and ethical businesses. The Council remains hopeful that with sustained efforts, significant positive changes will transform the marketplace in Fiji.
