Restricted movements will be implemented tonight in the towns of Ba, Rakiraki, and Tavua due to rising water levels affecting local shops. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized the necessity of these restrictions to ensure public safety and protect infrastructure in the affected towns.
Driu stated, “We are taking this precaution because of everyone’s safety. This is also done to protect the properties in town from opportunists.” Currently, four evacuation centers are operational in the Western Division, housing 226 individuals. This number is expected to increase if rainfall persists.
As part of the safety measures, the main highway connecting Ba to Rakiraki is closed, and accessibility to Tavua Town is restricted. Driu noted that police teams are actively evacuating individuals from disaster-stricken areas and will remain on standby throughout the night. The Fiji Police Force is committed to closely monitoring the situation as it develops.
