A restaurant owner is facing significant challenges after discovering that his establishment had been burglarized. Harminder Singh, the director of Maya Dhaba, an Indian restaurant in Suva, was shocked to learn that his office had been ransacked, with cash and liquor stolen. This incident is particularly disheartening for Singh, who was celebrating a successful holiday season just days earlier.

On the morning following a large event held at the restaurant, Singh’s staff found the back door ajar upon arriving for work. The burglars had entered through this door, stealing from the cash register and emptying the liquor cabinet. While the total value of the stolen items is still under assessment, Singh estimates that the losses could range from $10,000 to $15,000.

Singh explained that he stored a week’s worth of earnings, along with cash for employees who do not have bank accounts, in his office for deposit on Mondays. This theft poses a challenge for him as he now needs to figure out how to manage employee payments scheduled for Tuesday.

Concerned about rising crime rates, Singh has called on local authorities to enhance police presence in Suva, urging the community to take pride in their civic responsibilities. He emphasized the importance of looking out for one another to promote a safer environment for businesses and residents alike.

The police have acknowledged the incident and confirmed that a report has been filed at Totogo station, with an investigation now underway.

This unsettling experience for Singh serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and collaboration in maintaining safety and security. While such incidents are undoubtedly distressing, they also highlight the resilience and determination of local businesses to persevere through adversity.

Overall, community solidarity and awareness can foster a safer atmosphere, ensuring that business owners like Singh can continue to thrive and contribute positively to the local economy.
