A popular resort on the Coral Coast has committed to a comprehensive investigation following an incident in which seven women were hospitalized, reportedly due to “alcohol poisoning.” The Ministry of Health and local police have initiated inquiries, with toxicology testing results anticipated in a couple of days.

In light of the unfolding situation, Dr. Jemesa Tudrau, the Ministry’s permanent secretary for Health, has urged caution, emphasizing that the root cause remains undiscovered. Similarly, Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka has advised against making assumptions, stating that it is essential to await the test results before jumping to conclusions.

The guests affected—four Australians, one American, and two foreign residents—developed symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues after consuming a cocktail on Saturday. They were admitted to the Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka the following day. As inquiries got underway, the resort’s human resources director, Nitin Goundar, announced that they are also undertaking an internal investigation.

As of last night, one guest had been discharged from the hospital, while two others were reported to be in stable condition.

Mr. Goundar confirmed that the resort is reviewing CCTV footage, bar records, and other relevant data. He stated, “This is an isolated incident. Of all those served the same drink that day, only seven were affected.” The director reassured that the ingredients used in the drinks had been thoroughly checked and were also included in other beverages served that day without incident.

The resort has been operating for 45 years without a similar occurrence and maintains that its staff is trained to international standards and adheres to strict hygiene protocols. Mr. Goundar affirmed that the resort is cooperating with law enforcement and health officials in their investigations, indicating that day-to-day operations continue as normal despite the increased media attention. He reassured guests that their safety and satisfaction continue to be the highest priority.

This incident has sparked concern, but the resort’s proactive response in ensuring guest safety and cooperating with authorities reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability. As the situation develops, it’s essential for the community and visitors to remain informed while maintaining confidence in the resort’s dedication to providing a secure environment for all guests.
